UK Demands Tougher Line on Asylum, Foreign Cash and Police Killers

The UK delivered its clearest message of the week on governance and immigration, voting to ban foreign governments from funding Westminster APPGs and to overhaul local councils by identifying poor performers. The country also backed the view that the Home Office’s decision to issue asylum seekers with guidance on rape and sexual consent amounts to an admission of a specific public-safety risk to women.

The verdicts

Should foreign governments be banned from all forms of funding or support for Westminster APPGs? sailed through with the UK backing the move almost seven to one. The mood was captured neatly: our politicians should be governing for our benefit.

Should UK local government be reformed so poor performing officers are identified and placed on improvement plans? won almost nine votes in ten. The floor’s sharpest warning was about sacking the poor bloody infantry while ignoring the General.

Does the Home Office’s decision to issue asylum seekers with guidance on rape and sexual consent amount to an admission of a specific public-safety risk to women in the UK? carried the day by more than two to one. The booklet was treated as a tell rather than a primer.

Should the UK make whole life orders mandatory with no judicial discretion for the murder of police officers? passed by two votes to one. Our officers need our support and protection at every level, the country decided.

Should Harry and Meghan receive taxpayer-funded security upon returning to the UK? was rejected almost three to one. They’re not working royals, the strongest line ran.

Is a major constitutional change required in the UK? secured a majority for a new settlement, though the argument split over whether that meant a new house or simply better maintenance of the old one.

Should England get its own national anthem such as Rose of England or There'll Always Be an England? scraped a narrow Yes. The liveliest argument was for letting the public choose in a Boaty McBoatface-style poll to puncture elite pomposity.

Should Zack Polanski resign as Green Party leader? carried the platform by twelve points, with the most respected case wondering whether he should stay simply to show the party’s true face.

Voting continues today on fresh questions.
