Do STFC budget cuts risk UK government ambitions in AI and quantum?

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is implementing cost-saving measures to reach a sustainable financial position. Science minister Patrick Vallance and UKRI chief executive Ian Chapman state these cuts pose no risk to government priorities in artificial intelligence and quantum technologies. They emphasise that AI and quantum investments were not drawn from STFC's curiosity-driven research funding in particle physics, astronomy, and nuclear physics.
