Should it be lawful to express disagreement with another person's stated gender identity?
UK courts have ruled that gender-critical beliefs, including that sex is immutable and distinct from gender identity, are protected philosophical beliefs under the Equality Act 2010. The 2025 Supreme Court judgment confirmed that sex in the Act means biological sex. Recent government proposals on banning conversion practices explicitly safeguard expressing beliefs about LGBT+ identities, provided they do not involve abuse.

More education is needed to explain in clear terms about the X and Y chromosomes. It's not as simple as we brought up to believe. It would certainly help everyone to understand the complications that can arise with our genders. Most things are a huge learning curve over the centuries. What we thought, or were led to believe isn't necessarily true. Meantime, until we fully understand we should keep our thoughts to ourselves on the rights and wrongs of gender identity.
Whatever political philosophy one adopts, there must be a distinction between protecting people from harassment and compelling conformity of belief. People should be free to hold sincere views on contested questions, including views others find offensive or wrong. The proper boundary is threats, intimidation and harassment—not the mere expression of an unpopular belief.
