Should the UK Emissions Trading Scheme cover international maritime emissions?
The UK Emissions Trading Scheme caps emissions from key sectors to support the 2050 net-zero target. In 2023, ships on UK-related voyages emitted 16.4 million tonnes of CO2e. The 2026 expansion covers domestic maritime shipping but only 15% of UK-related shipping emissions.
