Should the UK introduce a universal basic income?
The UK operates a means-tested welfare system through Universal Credit that supports low-income households. Rising concerns over AI-driven job displacement, shrinking working-age population and stagnant economic growth have revived discussion of replacing parts of it with unconditional cash payments to all adults. No national UBI scheme exists, though small trials and pilots have tested similar ideas in other countries.
