NHS App compatibility with Huawei HarmonyOS ruled out
The news
Government has stated it has “no plans” to develop the NHS App for HarmonyOS or to assess related devices for accessibility. Baroness Gillian Merron, the minister for mental health and women’s health, gave the position in response to a written parliamentary question from Conservative peer Lord Syed Kamall. She said the NHS App is the digital front door to the National Health Service, giving patients greater control and choice over their healthcare. Ministers consider there are not enough users of HarmonyOS tablets in the UK to justify extending NHS tools to the operating system.
What's at stake
The NHS App provides access to services including appointment booking, prescription requests and health records. HarmonyOS is the operating system developed by Huawei and runs on some tablets used by UK citizens. Current policy leaves those users without the same level of digital access available on major mobile platforms. The decision rests on the scale of adoption rather than technical barriers or security assessments.
The government position treats the platform as marginal for public service delivery. No funding or development work is allocated to compatibility. This keeps resources focused on platforms with higher user numbers while maintaining the existing digital front door for the majority of patients.
The case for
A small number of HarmonyOS users still require equal access to NHS digital services. Excluding any group from the primary patient portal creates unequal treatment based on device choice. Extending compatibility would ensure every citizen can use the same tools regardless of the operating system on their tablet.
The case against
Public funds should not support development for a platform with very low uptake. Resources are finite and ministers judge that the number of affected users does not reach the threshold for new work. Prioritising widely used platforms allows the NHS to maintain and improve services for the largest number of patients without spreading limited budgets across marginal systems.
Why it matters now
The confirmation closes off any immediate route to HarmonyOS support. Users of the platform will continue to rely on alternative access methods or non-digital channels. No further assessment or development is scheduled unless uptake changes substantially.
