How Rossendale and Darwen has changed

Rossendale and Darwen elected Labour in 2024, with a majority of 5,628, and Andy MacNae’s Commons record also sits Left. Yet the seat’s platform voices do not place themselves with Labour: they divide instead between Green and Liberal Democrat, leaving the elected party without a claimant in the sample.

That is the sharper story than the broad direction of travel. Both voices are firebrands — The Open-Border Constitutional Firebrand and The Humanitarian Disarmament Firebrand — and on the platform’s national questions, every recorded answer runs against the UK majority.

This is not evidence that the wider constituency has changed its mind; it is a portrait of an unusually narrow and ideologically vivid slice of voters here. But it does suggest a Labour seat whose available voices are further left in temperament than in party attachment, with liberal and green instincts competing for the same political space.
