Should all halal food sold in the UK have a legal requirement to be clearly labelled?

UK law requires animals to be stunned before slaughter but exempts religious rites for halal and kosher meat. No legal requirement exists to label halal products, allowing their use in supermarkets, fast food and public institutions without consumer knowledge. In 2026 Esther McVey introduced a bill for compulsory halal and kosher meat labelling to improve transparency and animal welfare.

Seems like a no brainer. Those who don’t want the products AND those who want the products will be able to identify them more readily. + considering all the other labelling standards, it doesn’t really increase the existing burden on suppliers / sellers.

Better that halal food not be sold, period.

The normal way of slaughtering animals we eat, is by stunning them first. Halal meat comes from animals that are stunned first. Kosher meat comes from animals that are hung upside down and bleed out, to drain as much blood as possible. Honestly, I don't understand the fuss. It's all so similar, that I wonder who or what is behind this "campaign".

Consumers should be given information about the process options used in the products they purchase. Organic food is already labeled as such, giving consumers the choice. A similar choice should be available regarding animal welfare.
