Should the government weaken the planning system's ability to tackle climate change?
The government has consulted on changes to the National Planning Policy Framework that would make it harder for councils to set zero-carbon standards, reduce overheating, or refuse applications on climate grounds. The Climate Change Committee warns that 40°C summers could become routine and up to 10,000 people a year could die prematurely from overheating. The Centre for Sustainable Energy and the Better Planning Coalition have called for a reset of planning policy.
