Would rejoining the EU single market outweigh the sovereignty trade-offs for the United Kingdom?
The UK left the EU single market on 31 December 2020 after Brexit, ending free movement of goods, services, capital and people with the bloc. Since then, UK exports to the EU have faced new customs checks, regulatory divergence and non-tariff barriers, while the government has pursued independent trade deals outside the EU. Polls continue to show divided public opinion on whether closer alignment or full re-entry would deliver net economic gains.
