Should the UK ban disposable plastic bottles?
The UK is introducing a deposit return scheme for single-use plastic drinks bottles and cans from October 2027, charging a 20p refundable deposit to boost recycling rates and cut litter. Studies show microplastics are present in both UK tap and bottled water, with plastic bottles and caps contributing particles through shedding, though water treatment removes most larger ones. A full ban would go further than the current scheme by eliminating production of these single-use items.

We move far too slowly getting things done in the UK that are important. There are other renewable sources we can make plastic from. There are plenty of items that can be made from existing plastic. In less well off countries they make a living out of reusing plastics thrown away by us. How many years have we been aware of the rivers of plastic in Indonesia coming from countries like ours. Time to move forward.
We should ban all single use plastics. The health issues plastic causes can no longer be ignored!
Scandinavia and Germany sorted beverage recycling decades ago, yet we're still scheduling deposit schemes for late 2027. It’s laughable. An outright ban tops microplastics at source and forces industry into circular aluminium and glass. Pretty sure cans and refill stations work perfectly fine.
Why? Another cockamamie idea that'll end up just costing the public more money? Whatever next!
Another idea to be paid ordinary people. Find a cheaper and better replacement first then market will play accordingly.
I think giving people the option to buy and recycle plastic instead will be more effective. There are situations where I wouldn't want a glass bottle or can due to the danger of breakage. Card bottles are alright but pretty flimsy.
