Should the UK leave the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)?
The UK has been a signatory to the ECHR since 1951 and incorporated its rights into domestic law via the Human Rights Act 1998. The convention underpins aspects of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement with the EU, the Good Friday Agreement, and several bilateral security arrangements. In 2026 the Labour government remains committed to membership while pursuing limited reforms on migration cases, while the Conservatives and Reform UK advocate withdrawal to ease deportations of failed asylum seekers and foreign criminals.

The Leave vote was to stop the EU meddling in British affairs. We should leave and create a British bill of rights that would stop the ECHR having a stranglehold on our legal system.
The ECHR is all about protecting human rights and political freedoms. I recommend reading about it on Wikipedia, it's interesting. The boats started up in 2015, us leaving the EU, made it harder for us to deport illegal immigrants. Reform seem to have stirred people up into thinking we must leave ECHR, the problem is the people riding roughshod over basic human rights. Not the ECHR. We must stay.
We should just change UK law to give our courts ultimate sovereignty and then over rule nationally and ignore where appropriate.
The ridiculous convention is eating away at all that is well and good in the western world. Despite what the human rights lawyers and bleeding heart leftist say, it was never intended as a mechanism for the 3rd world to pick and chose the best option for economic migration, it was to stop another holocaust. Ditch it NOW and retrospectively rescind citizenship before we’re all living in squalor
The reason we have the small boats is nothing to do with the ECHR, it's due to government incompetence. It's an easy excuse for a government to throw our human rights down the drain to focus on immigrant scapegoats. I support withdrawing from the ECHR only in the case that we establish a British Bill of Human Rights that entrenches a higher standard of rights for all Brits
If it is excuse for UK government not to follow people's order then yes. But I believe this is only excuse, they will find another, and the next one when required. They simply do not believe in borders and believe all people are the same. Globalists.
Walk away, and you wreck Northern Irish peace, lose access to European extradition pacts, and blind our police to foreign criminal records. Stripping basic human rights from every British citizen just because Whitehall can't manage basic deportation casework just seems like pure institutional vandalism to me.
