Does the Chagos Islands deal threaten UK-US security ties?
The UK signed an agreement in 2025 to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius while leasing back the Diego Garcia military base for 99 years at an average cost of £101 million annually. The joint UK-US base on Diego Garcia supports operations across the Indian Ocean, Middle East and beyond. As of September 2026 the deal remains paused indefinitely after US President Donald Trump withdrew support and called it a terrible deal, prompting the UK to review it.

Any case for a deal is contingent on surrendering ALL sense of Chagossian self-determination or British self-interest to a non-binding judgement by Russian and Chinese judges in activist courts propped up by reparation-chasing AU and hostile chancers. Accepting legitimacy of these rulings harms US-UK security. Give an inch… That’s before relying on Mauritius playing ball for 99 years instead of shaking us (or worse China) for more £ whenever the other ruling clan gets power
Regardless of opinion on the actual decision over Chagos Islands... You can't pretend a defence pact isn't strained when Trump literally vetos the arrangement and pauses the treaty. Diego Garcia only functions as a joint operational hub. If the White House believes Mauritius opens the door to Chinese surveillance in the Indian Ocean, our security ties are demonstrably fractured
