Should the UK government nationalise artificial intelligence infrastructure to ensure public control?
The UK government is investing in sovereign AI infrastructure including a £500 million fund for startups, £2 billion to increase compute capacity twentyfold by 2030, the Isambard-AI supercomputer, and AI Growth Zones attracting private investment. This aims to reduce reliance on a handful of mainly US companies controlling most global AI compute while promoting innovation, jobs, and national security. Public sentiment shows mixed views on AI with growing calls for stronger regulation and concerns over risks.

I would feel safer if AI was nationalised. It's possible the government would be able to put safeguards in place to protect us from unwelcome AI input. AI has already infiltrated other computers gathering private information, without anyone knowing. There's also the possibility of a Terminator situation. I'm sure there are plenty who have seen the film and are concerned it could happen, even though it sounds impossible, too sci-fi.
As far as I am concerned as soon as government takes over the AI it becomes artificial idiotic.
The last thing we want or can afford is the UK government stepping in to manage something that’s working. Nationalisation will kill development and leave the UK behind, whilst costing billions as it spirals into inefficiencies
Subsidise, invest, regulate - but don't nationalise.
AI poses a myriad of problems and regulation might be part of the answer, but nationalisation certainly isn't the solution
Nationalising labs just kills their ability to raise equity, and probably destroys the nacent uk AI scene. What the government should do urgently is stick a firewall between OpenAI and Claude's domains, and the UK internet. If US AI firms want UK customers, the government should be storing a copy of all search/responses served. This is the UK contribution to US labs training dataset, we need our own copy, in case the US cut us off, and we need to catch up with sovereign AI.
We cannot trust US companies and administrations to have our best interests at heart. Anything we can do to improve our self-reliance and end being beholden onto a foreign state we have no say over, is always going to be for the better.
