Should the UK Government extend its Islamophobia guidelines to cover all religions?

In March 2026 the UK Government adopted a non-statutory working definition of anti-Muslim hostility to address record levels of hate crime, where nearly half of all religious hate crimes target Muslims or those perceived to be Muslim. The definition covers criminal acts, prejudicial stereotyping and unlawful discrimination against Muslims as individuals rather than protecting the religion of Islam itself. Critics from other faith communities argue this creates unequal treatment because no equivalent specific definitions exist for anti-Christian, anti-Hindu, anti-Sikh or anti-Jewish hostility beyond general equality and hate crime legislation.

I agonised over this one. I strongly think prioritising protection for one religion is an obscenity. But that's mainly because protecting *any* religion the way this legislation does is an obscenity. So, in the end, I voted no on the grounds that extending the guidelines makes a bad thing worse: it adds more bad legislation. Far better to repeal the original legislation, and simply enforce existing laws consistently and without bias.

It should be a blanket law that covers all races & religions. Including white Christians

Hate crimes are hate crimes, simple as. If someone got harassed for being Jewish or Sikh or Christian, it should be just as bad as a Muslim getting harassed in the eyes of the law.

If we're defining anti religious prejudice, it needs to expand to all religions. Not just the one that historically votes Labour.

We should have no Islamophobia definition, or any blasphemy laws. All religions, including Islam, should be subject to scrutiny, criticism and derision
