Does wealth concentration among billionaires undermine democratic control of society?

Yes 57%No 43%63 votes cast

Billionaires own major media outlets, fund political campaigns and shape policy through donations and lobbying. Recent online discussion highlights their sway over social media platforms, legacy media narratives and access to government contracts. Wealth concentration allows a small number of individuals to influence elections, regulation and public discourse across the UK and globally.

A 14-point margin sounds tidy, but 36-27 from 63 voters is a narrow, contested result, not a rout. Yes cleared 50% in every age bracket bar one, which makes the result feel broad rather than a single-generation revolt against billionaire power.

The exception is telling: 35-44s were the only cohort to reject the premise outright, 3 yes to 5 no, a 38% share that sits well below every neighbouring group. By contrast the 25-34s, the largest bloc in the vote at 22, went 64% yes, and 45-54s (small, n=6) leaned yes too, giving the chamber an odd U-shape rather than a clean age gradient.

Gender barely moved the needle, men and women landing within three points of each other and both comfortably in yes territory, which suggests this cut less on identity lines than on where people sit relative to economic precarity or, conversely, established assets. It echoes the broader debate about oligarchy and platform capitalism, from Musk's ownership of X to non-dom tax rows, without breaking down along the standard Brexit-era fault lines of age versus everything else.

The 65+ group ended dead even, 3-3, the one bracket where the platform simply could not make up its mind.
