Should all UK utilities be nationalised, including water, electricity, and gas?
Most UK utilities such as water, electricity distribution and gas have been in private ownership since the 1980s and 1990s privatisations. Thames Water faces near-insolvency with £20bn debt, prompting debate over special administration and greater public control under Prime Minister Andy Burnham. British Steel was nationalised in July 2026 to protect the last blast furnaces; UK coal production has fallen to near zero with the last power station closed in 2024.

Goodness knows, many of the services provided by some private companies desperately need a really good shaking up. But, frankly, the idea of handing control of these essential services to the tender mercies of the faceless, unelected bureaucrats in quangos, or worse, government, is simply terrifying.
Government can't run a proverbial p*ss up in a brewery.
Very difficult internal debate, Yes just coming out ahead. Major issue is the incompetence, arrogance, wastefulness that is likely in monopolistic, nationalised organisations, managing vital resources - particularly with the political clowns tasked with oversight. Sadly, Private Sector demonstrably underperformed for their customers, whilst generally the Chief Execs & shareholders flourish. Multiple suppliers created confusion, duplication & inflated prices
Hell no, they should be truly private, with bankruptcies, competitions and free market. Somehow banks, telephony or insurance doing quite well - why not other media. And why we always hear about nationalizations of something rather than privatization of things working bad as public. Police force, prisons, military, border force, DWP etc. - all could act be private with free market shaping them.
I am rather attached to having heat, light and water, and would prefer not to see the governments stellar level of incompetence brought to the task of destroying all our services.
