Was President Trump wrong to strike a diesel deal with Russia?

US diesel prices have surged above $6 per gallon amid global supply disruptions from the war in Ukraine and attacks on Russian refineries. On 9 October 2026 President Trump announced a deal after a call with Vladimir Putin for Russia to supply over 300,000 tons of diesel immediately, followed by millions of tons more, and the US Treasury temporarily waived sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 2027.

The whole of Europe is buying Putin's energy and then using it against him in the war. Absolute madness.

Given that Trump recently signed the Graham bill imposing stronger sanctions on Russia over Ukraine, he has directly gone against his own Congress for as yet questionable advantage. He has again signalled to the world that his administration cannot be trusted and the USA cannot be relied upon as a bulwark against ambitious territorial aggression.

As the dust settles over another Trump move, we see that: - He is now still in play for his mid-terms because Texas will like this move. Cue Wile E Coyote teeth-gnashing from the hapless Democrats. - He has put his money where his mouth is re saying the Ukraine war must end, ditto teeth-gnashing from the hapless EU.

It could lead to peace between Russia and Ukraine, Trump does things differently but generally gets things done.

To say that he was wrong is an understatement. His own stupidity has created this situation, and now he's cosying up to a warmongering egotist in order to dig himself out of his own hole.

The corruption uselessness of EU & leaders of Germany France & UK have created this. Trump tried hard to exit the Ukraine conflict which is considerably more nuanced than many realise with the interests of the FIC & MIC being challenged by him. The war is about a broken global financial system & the need for collateral to keep it on life support. Russia does not want expanded war but Global Bankers NATO & EU do. Trump cares about US the UK cares more about Ursula von de Leyan

The West is in a proxy war with Russia. We shouldn't be doing deals and helping their economy and ultimately their war effort. Trump is only doing the deal because of the impact of fuel costs on the forthcoming mid term elections. If he hadn't caused chaos by attacking Iran, fuel would not be so dear.

I think the only words I really need to say are... What a pathetic, humiliating double standard. Nothing screams 'American Energy Dominance' quite like grovelling to an adversarial dictator because your domestic fuel topped six dollars. European allies took real economic pain to cut Moscow off, only for the master negotiator himself to fold like a wet napkin under slight pressure... You couldn't write a more pathetic climbdown.
