Did Margaret Thatcher's reforms unduly impact the nation outside of the south east?
Margaret Thatcher's governments from 1979 to 1990 pursued privatisation, union reforms and industrial restructuring that closed coal mines, steelworks and shipyards. These changes concentrated in northern England, Scotland and Wales, where traditional heavy industries declined sharply while service sectors grew in the south east. Unemployment in former industrial areas rose significantly during the 1980s before partial recovery through new investment.
