Should all online political content show who funded or sponsored it, with creators required to disclose this?
UK law requires imprints on digital political campaign material since November 2023, showing who is behind it. Platforms like Meta and X have separate rules for paid political ads that demand sponsor labelling. Non-advertising content such as independent videos, podcasts and documentaries often lacks mandatory funding disclosure despite growing concerns over undisclosed influence.

Yes. Media literacy at 16-17yrs taught us if an article or news clip makes you feel an extreme negative emotion (anger, hatred, fear) & it's not a natural disaster (sadness)...FUDGING QUESTION WHO, WHAT & INTENT!!! I spend a few minutes checking funding for everything that appears in front of me, in any format inc people who first feel relatable! See: pipelines. If you stand firm in your words, be fair & show us who stands with you. We will make up our own minds. 🤓
The extent that some people go to already to hide their donations means that this would be unenforceable and pointless. Add to that, would outfits like hope not hate, just stop oil and extinction rebellion be included or just political parties? The US has people like Nate Friedman & Nick Shirley to help uncover the left's deception- who do we have in the UK to do the same - Tommy? Sadly, the gov & MSM would ensure the focus is on the right.
If a creator takes money from dark money lobby groups or foreign front companies to shape elections, the public has a right to see who pays the bills.
This is the only guarantee we have that we aren't being deceived by the ulterior motives of malicious operators. AI should be scrawling content religiously for everything it can highlight as duplicity
Funding doesn't PROVE any quid pro quo. This will lead to some false conclusions. But at least it's a level playing field.
All party finances should be transparent. And public spending too.
Yes. When Twitter added locations, it exposed many fake accounts claiming to be British that were actually in Nigeria, Russia or Iran. This is the 21st century and many countries are propagandising and manipulating us online. Perhaps seeing 'paid for by Putin' would make people stop and think for two seconds about the content they mindlessly consume.
