Has Utilities privatisation failed?
Successive UK governments privatised water companies in England and Wales in 1989, electricity and gas networks and supply in the 1980s-90s, and British Telecom earlier. Private firms have delivered infrastructure upgrades and competition in supply markets but face criticism for high consumer bills, record dividends to shareholders including overseas investors, sewage pollution in rivers, and inadequate investment in reservoirs and networks amid climate pressures. Recent winters have highlighted capacity shortfalls while regulatory bodies like Ofwat and Ofgem face scrutiny over price controls and debt levels in firms such as Thames Water.
