Should all convicted paedophiles receive whole‑life sentences?
Whole life orders are currently reserved for the most serious murders where the seriousness is exceptionally high, such as those with sexual or sadistic motivation involving children or multiple victims; they are not available for non-homicide sexual offences. Convicted child sex offenders, including those labelled paedophiles, typically receive determinate sentences, extended determinate sentences or life sentences with a minimum term based on Sentencing Council guidelines that consider harm, culpability and aggravating factors like grooming. Recent reforms under the Sentencing Act 2026 have excluded serious child sex offences from early release provisions to keep such offenders in prison longer, amid public concern over lenient outcomes for some image-based or contact offences.

Not only is life imprisonment wildly expensive, but making no gradation in punishments for such serious offences may actually make outcomes worse for the victims. Similar to the rationale which makes kidnappers in many American states so casual about killing their victims: they're already guilty of a crime for which the penalty is life imprisonment, so there's no incentive to *not* do something even worse, especially if it means you're less likely to get caught.
As much as I would like to throw away they key on these disgusting excuses for human beings, whole life is very, very expensive. A shorter term in prison with physical castration as a condition of release would save money and hopefully end their perverted urge to harm our young.
We can't go from 90 whole-life prisoners in total to thousands added every year. If it was just for the most serious sexual offences then yes.
Death is to harsh but castration doesn’t clear the mental part of the thrill of the sexual arousal so I can’t see a way to rehabilitate them so they need removing from society.
Logic says that some are worse than others, & some lesser offences might warrant the chance to rehabilitate ... ... but then I think about it and they fill me with revulsion, as it should any normal person. I have zero sympathy for them, and wouldn't care if they locked them up and threw away the key. For the worst I have no issue with the death penalty. So the answer has to be yes. Perhaps a nice penal colony ... ... in Antarctica. Might even let them have an anorak.
I voted yes, but instead they should receive the death penalty.
