Should generative AI tools be banned in the UK?
Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and image generators are currently legal and widely used in the UK, with no general ban in place. The government promotes AI adoption for growth and innovation through sandboxes, funding, and sector-specific rules under existing laws like the Online Safety Act, while targeting harms such as non-consensual intimate images, sexualised content for under-18s, and copyright issues in training models. Recent actions focus on regulating risks in healthcare, online safety for children, and frontier model safety rather than prohibition.

This is akin to banning the printing press because criminals print counterfeit banknotes... You don't need bans you need regulation. Banning it just outlaws all the legitimate uses of generative AI which is massively increasing productivity in public services admin, tech coding productivity... Doing anything that limits that is just growth suicide. You can't just ban it because SOME bad people use it.

It's here to stay and it would kill British productivity
AI is here to stay, a ban would just put the UK at a disadvantage against other economies.
I changed my mind as I was hitting yes, but as it was my last vote it locked it in. AI scares me, raised on Terminator, but it will still march onwards even if we banned it, so why not benefit whilst it's beneficial.
No, you can't stop progress and delaying it would made us weaker. Embrace it and thrive with it.
Regulated yes, banned no. People would just use VPNs or sketchy off brand ChatGPTs instead.
