Members back ministers' discipline and police powers, but Gogglebox barely clears the sofa

The day's story is a lopsided appetite for accountability. refnation members voted overwhelmingly for disciplining ministers who announce major decisions to the media before telling Parliament, with the top Yes case dismissing the Speaker's rebuke as toothless. Then came the other end of the scale: Is it right for a sitting Prime Minister to appear on Gogglebox? is the day's closest result, and Yes only just carried it, on the plain case that it is for charity and harmless.

The verdicts

The justice questions ran firmly one way. Members overwhelmingly backed allowing officers to use reasonable force to bring offenders to court for sentencing, though the top No voice called the idea purely performative theatre. They were almost as emphatic on removing and prosecuting protesters who block roads, even if some Yes voters hedged on the prosecution part and the most-respected No case happily conceded removal.

On money, members comfortably backed exempting the state pension from income tax, even for those with other income, with the winning side treating the question as barely worth debating. The tax debate cut the other way on taxing income from wealth at the same rates as wages, where Yes won only narrowly and its most-respected case, awkwardly, wanted no such taxes at all.

On rights and the economy, members comfortably voted for keeping the Online Safety Act in place, though even its best-respected defender admitted it needs more work, while critics warned of digital ID by the back door. They also comfortably backed the UK trying to raise its birth rate rather than relying on immigration, with the leading No voice insisting that misogyny be addressed first, and Yes voters mostly answering with housing, cost of living and a harder line on immigration.

Voting continues today, and there is a fresh ballot waiting for anyone who fancies disagreeing with themselves.
