UK backs Rwanda rethink and nationalisation

The UK delivered a clear message on immigration policy, voting to reconsider the Rwanda Scheme while also backing a hard rule that illegal entry should disqualify people from claiming refugee status.

Should PIP payments be means-tested? The governing logic was that all benefits should have a means-testing element. A decisive vote favoured changing the system rather than preserving universality.

Should the UK introduce the Alternative Vote? A compromise many treated as imperfect still crossed the line, winning narrowly even as its own supporters admitted it was not a great system.

Should the UK further deregulate planning laws to accelerate housebuilding? The country agreed more homes are needed but not that loosening the rules is the answer. Concerns about green space, land-banking, quality and location sank further deregulation.

Has Israel committed human rights abuses that would justify UK military action? Voters rejected military action by nearly three to one. The strongest arguments against did not all deny the abuses but insisted British force was not the answer.
