UK Demands Fair Shake for Older Workers

The single clearest message from Saturday’s voting was that the UK does not accept pitting older workers against the young. Should the government provide as much employment support for people aged 50+ who are unemployed as it does for 18-24? delivered a resounding yes, with the chamber insisting it is not an either/or choice but both.

The verdicts

Three justice questions produced strong majorities. Should the UK legalise approved pepper spray for adults to carry with training for self-defence? passed narrowly; the blunt logic that “guns are better, but always better than nothing” carried the day. Are prisoner rehabilitation programmes worth the time, money, and effort? won comfortably, though the loudest voices demanded tougher sentences alongside the programmes. On Should penalties for AI-generated CSAM be the same as for human-created CSAM? the country was near-unanimous, every written argument coming from the winning side.

The country split almost down the middle on Should strike action be completely banned for NHS and emergency service workers? The ban lost by a whisker after a debate that never quite decided whether patient safety or bargaining rights came first. Should there be a general election before Christmas? was rejected by a clear margin; the chamber heard the call for a fresh mandate but chose continuity instead.

On immigration, Is the government misleading the public on asylum seeker accommodation when it says hotel numbers have halved? passed by nearly two to one. The verdict treated substitution of other accommodation as the real story rather than genuine resolution. Finally, Has supply-side economic policy improved living standards for all income groups in the UK? was dismissed by nearly five to one, the room repeating that “nothing trickles down.”
