Delete your account

How to remove your account, and what happens to what you leave behind.

Delete it yourself

Deletion is immediate and permanent. There is no undo.

  1. Sign in and open your profile
  2. Scroll to the bottom and open Danger zone
  3. Confirm with your password, or by typing your username
  4. Press Delete my account

The same steps work in the app and on the website — they are the same account and the same button.

If you cannot sign in

Email contact@refnation.uk from the address you registered with and ask us to delete the account. We will confirm it is yours before removing anything, and we will reply when it is done.

Delete some of your data and keep your account

  • Opinions and replies: press Delete on any opinion or reply of your own.
  • Postcode, date of birth and gender: open your profile, choose Edit on your details, clear the field and save. Clearing your postcode removes your constituency too.
  • Notifications: in the app, switch off App notifications on your profile. This deletes the notification token stored for your phone.
  • Votes: you can change any vote while its referendum is open, but individual votes cannot be removed. Deleting the account removes all of them.
  • Anything else: email contact@refnation.uk from the address you registered with, say what you want removed, and we will reply within one month.

What is removed

  • Your profile, username, email address and password
  • Your date of birth, gender, postcode and constituency
  • Your party preference and voting intention history
  • Every vote you have cast, and your analysis of where you stand
  • Your opinions and replies
  • Respect you have given and respect you have received
  • Who you follow and who follows you
  • Your titles, streak, notifications and notification subscriptions
  • Any referendum you submitted that had not yet been reviewed

What stays, and why

A referendum you asked that has already run stays up, without your name on it. Once other people have voted in a question it stops being only yours — deleting it would erase their votes too, and the published result along with them. Your name is removed from it and it reads as posted by refnation.

An opinion someone has replied to is emptied rather than removed. Your words go and the entry is marked deleted, but the position in the thread remains so the reply beneath it does not vanish without explanation.

An anonymous note that an account was deleted. How long you were a member, how many votes you cast and, if you chose to tell us, why you left. It has no name, email or account attached, and it is deleted after 12 months.

Aggregate results are not recalculated. Your individual vote is gone, but the published percentages for referendums that have already closed stay as they were reported on the day.

If you are a founding supporter, your membership is cancelled first, so you are never charged again. A record of the payments you made stays with us and with Stripe, our payment processor, without your account attached, because the law requires businesses to keep financial records.

How long it takes

Immediately. The deletion runs when you press the button; nothing is queued and there is no grace period. Backups taken before that point are overwritten on their own rolling schedule and are never used to restore an individual account.
