Over 73,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 2023 with around 50% women and children. A June 2026 UN Commission of Inquiry report concluded Israel has committed genocide through deliberate targeting of children and other acts. The ICJ genocide case brought by South Africa remains ongoing with further submissions due in 2027 and 2029.
The side that won this question did so by two votes, leaving a verdict closer to a legal argument under pressure than a settled moral consensus. The chamber’s sharpest tension was that the most-respected No case outranked the most-respected Yes case, even as the final decision went the other way.
Yes voters argued from the cumulative record: civilian deaths, the destruction of homes and essential infrastructure, and restrictions on food and medical aid. The floor’s strongest Yes case said, “International law must apply universally, not selectively”, insisting that “creating conditions calculated to destroy a population cannot be excused as self-defence.”
No voters did not generally deny the scale of the suffering; they disputed the classification and the intention behind it. The most-respected No argument put the case bluntly: “If Israel had wanted to commit genocide then there would have been a lot more deaths.” A more legally cautious voice added that “the threshold for genocide is rightly very high”, while others placed responsibility on Hamas, civilian shielding and the circumstances of war.
The two sides often answered different questions. Yes treated intent as something that could be inferred from conduct — “intent can be inferred from conduct” — while No demanded clearer proof of an exterminatory purpose and stressed that the ICJ has not yet delivered its final ruling. That places this vote inside the wider argument over whether international law can respond to engineered deprivation and collective punishment before a court has closed the case.
This was not a commanding verdict for either camp: it was a narrow decision to call the conduct genocide, reached amid a debate whose strongest voices remained divided over what the word requires.

Wow. Only 51%... should be much, much higher... very disappointing. Are we Israeli? Or are we an independent state, able to see international law clearly violated on many levels, and empathetic to the ungodly amounts of suffering?
Sending those living in Gaza to a place saying it'll be safe, then attacking that area, is designed to slowly remove Palestinians. They've done it to the press, medical staff, hospitals, then there's the actions of the illegal settlers. It certainly looks like genocide.
By every metric and expert opinion, yes. I worry for those who vote no; probably some lead poisoning and gullible-'ness' going on there.
If someone came into our country, took 200 hostages, murdered babies and raped children. And then subsequently boobie trapped all houses, based themselves amongst civilians, hospitals, schools etc. Id expect any country to reply with worse.
73k Palestinians dead since Oct 2023, around half women & children. You don’t get numbers like that from “just targeting Hamas.” At least 18 major organisations worldwide have called it genocide. The UN inquiry found genocide, including attacks on children and destruction of homes, hospitals, schools, water & food. Making Gaza unliveable while blocking aid isn’t self-defence. International law must apply to everyone—or it means nothing.

Israel have not covered themselves in glory, but the only group in the conflict with a stated aim of genocide is Hamas. That toll includes Hamas fighters. Compiled by the Gaza health ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. The IDF claimed it had killed around 23600 combatants. Internal reports from February 2026 indicated that Hamas planned to provide stipends to the families of 50,000 "martyrs" they explicitly identified as fighters.
A strange genocide when the population increases rather than decreases. If you want an actual example of genocide look at the jewish poulations of the Islamic countries in the world in the 1930s and the change in population by the 1950s. It is well documented today that in the 70s when proxies failed to remove Isreal a Soviet misinformation campaign began against Isreal claiming they were colonial, genocidal, apartheidists. The Soviet Empire is gone but the lies remain
