Should non-stun slaughter of animals be banned outright?
UK law mandates stunning livestock before slaughter to prevent pain but exempts non-stun methods for halal and kosher meat. Around 27 million animals were slaughtered without pre-stunning in 2024 representing 2.6% of the total. The Food Standards Agency found no clear evidence of more welfare breaches in non-stun compared with stunned slaughter yet RSPCA and BVA maintain it causes avoidable suffering while religious groups defend the practice.

Animals deserve respect
Non-stun slaughter is banned because it causes unnecessary suffering. Allowing exemptions is immoral kowtowing to religious extremism.
Yes - but by also working with religious groups to find alternative humane means that are also religiously acceptable.
Animal welfare law should be based on veterinary science. Slicing an animal's throat while it's fully conscious causes undeniable, prolonged agony... the RSPCA have been clear on this for decades. I think the faith argument is a bit ridiculous considering over 80% of UK halal meat is already pre-stunned anyway.
