Should people who buy private health insurance get 20% tax relief off the premium?

Currently individuals receive no income tax relief on private medical insurance premiums paid from post-tax income. Reform UK proposed 20% tax relief on such premiums before the 2024 election to reduce pressure on the NHS by encouraging more private care. The policy was estimated to cost £1.7 billion annually and criticised by Labour as a tax cut for the wealthiest.

Most private health care is dealt with by the NHS. My friend paid privately for his back issues he waited two weeks to be seen by the NHS doctor that is under and had waited months to see, so no they shouldn't get 20% tax back as they are only paying to jump the waiting list.

Handing a £1.7 billion taxpayer subsidy to people who can already afford private healthcare is completely regressive.

No. Support the NHS. It's the best organisation in the world. It just needs to get back on track. You can help if you educate yourself & your children on living a healthy life & our goal should be to NOT NEED the NHS for too many things throughout our lifetime, but live reassured that it will be there for you if & when you need it. I hope improvements in services happen in my lifetime cuz there are good people in it. I hope YOU are well, with a healthy mind & body.

People with private health insurance will still use the NHS when it suits them.

Private insurance does not exclude you from NHS access, so shouldn’t merit tax exemption
