Should there be a limit on how many times the NHS funds free addiction treatment for one person?

In England, drug and alcohol treatment is free at the point of use, and no rule caps how many times one person can be funded for it. Councils commission most services, and from April 2026 their funding sits in a ringfenced Public Health Grant, set in a three-year settlement published in February 2026. Residential rehab and inpatient detox places are scarce and are rationed by assessment. Clinical guidance treats relapse as common and says treatment should be reviewed and adjusted.

Number of treatments should not be limited, noting reoccurrence may indicate low effectiveness of that method so different treatments should be considered

It makes no sense... Relapse is literally a common part of addiction. Capping attempts doesn't magically cure people... it just dumps them onto the streets. So more overdoses, higher crime rates, and far higher long term costs for A&E, prisons, and policing. Sounds great...
