Should we remove gender reassignment as a protected characteristic from the Equality Act?
The Gender Recognition Act 2004 allows adults to obtain a Gender Recognition Certificate changing their legal gender for most purposes including birth certificates after medical diagnosis and two years living in the acquired gender. A 2025 Supreme Court ruling established that sex in the Equality Act 2010 means biological sex at birth and a GRC does not alter this for single-sex services or spaces. The updated EHRC Code of Practice confirms trans people retain gender reassignment protections but sex remains biological. The Labour government has committed to reforming the GRA to simplify it while retaining a dysphoria diagnosis but has not yet introduced legislation.

The equality act gives explicit protections from discrimination on the basis of both biological sex and being trans, that seems to me to be the right balance

Removing gender reassignment from the Equality Act is an open charter to legalise discrimination. It means an employer could sack a worker, a landlord could evict a tenant, and a business could refuse service purely because someone is trans, with zero legal recourse. Just sounds like state sanctioned cruelty to feed a culture war.
Its a difficult one this, when your born you have a gender, when you die, you do too. My opinion is that everyone has a right to be recognised for who they are as a person, people's personality changes over the years, as does people's choices in life. Gay and trans identifying people should keep the rights that have been given to them. I believe in freedom to choose who you are and what you want to be.

Biological reality is being ignored at the cost of the safety of women and children. Everyone has the right to live their life as they choose, so long as it doesn't negatively impact others.
Yes, because gender reassignment discrimination has never been defined. What is gender? What counts as reassignment? What counts as discrimination?
Yes. Sex is biological. The Court said so. A certificate is paper. It does not change the fact. Gender reassignment as a protected class is how the fiction stays in the Act after the judgment. Assault is already illegal. Single-sex spaces follow sex. Do not keep a category that papers over the crack the Court opened.
I don't want the people involved to be discriminated against, but we have to look at this again. We all see the reports of how this is being abused. I say yes, but let's look at some different protection for people with genuine concerns.
