The sweeping proposition that Islamic practices are incompatible with UK values won by more than two to one. The floor’s most-respected Yes case called Islam “fundamentally a way of life incompatible with western society”, making the debate less about individual conduct than about whether a religious tradition could sit comfortably within a liberal national culture.
Yes voters built that case around women’s status, sharia, free expression and the relationship between religion and state. One of the sharper formulations described Islam as “totalising, denigrates the role of women and is opposed to freedom of expression and conscience”; yet even on the winning side, a voter admitted that “Both the “yes” and “no” cases are correct.”
The strongest No argument was less a defence of every Islamic practice than a demand for discrimination between faith, extremism and criminality. It insisted that “British law & British values outrank any other consideration, without exception”, while another No voice said, “Real followers of Islam align with many British values.” The two sides often talked past each other: Yes treated hostile or illiberal interpretations as evidence about Islam itself, while No treated them as the work of factions that should be challenged under rules applied to everyone.
That leaves the result inside the UK’s argument over integration, religious freedom and anti-Muslim prejudice, rather than resolving it. The room heard warnings about non-reciprocal tolerance, but also the counterclaim that “anti-Muslim hatred” is itself incompatible with British values; the question’s breadth allowed both concerns to coexist without testing where the boundary lies.
The verdict was emphatic, but the argument beneath it remained qualified: the room voted on compatibility while disputing what, precisely, counted as Islam.

It seems to be fundamentally a way of life incompatible with western society, where status is given to males, women subjugated,dress codes enforced, where cousin/ child marriage is allowed, where men can have several wives.A way of life which permits FGM, ‘honour’ killings , toxic masculinity which makes girls from 9 cover their heads to avoid inflaming male passion.Male ‘passion ‘ which can be diverted to western children seemingly without censure from leaders.No words left
I would say no. The majority of individual Muslims and their families are doing this. But there are too many who are not and too many that are anti Britain. Look at MI5 watchlists. Look at the inability of people to challenge the ideas behind Islam or of comedians to make jokes. The institution of Islam is treated very differently to Christianity and pretty much all other religions.. Britain is a tolerant society. But we also challenge openly and this now seems forbidden.
Islam is a mess. It is incompatible even with itself: Shia vs Sunni vs dozen smaller variations. Part religion, part political movement, part strict recipe on how to live, with no central body interpretating the scripture and reverting, often violently, every attempt to modernize or reform. In addition cultures of Islam often poor, violent and backward. The world, Western world particularly, progressed forward, Islam in its majority not so much.
I think Britain is a tolerant & welcoming nation, just not in the numbers which have come of late. But we should be clear that British law & British values outrank any other consideration, without exception. I think the government should be much more robust about British values and the need to integrate, & should be more forceful when individuals & groups do not comply. When it comes to people who have moved here from abroad, that does include requiring them to leave PDQ.
Many aspects of Islam are clearly abhorrent to our modern sensibilities, morals and ethics. Child marriage, misogyny, inhumane religious slaughter, killing infidels and apostates, to name just a few. Not everything in the Quran is bad, just as not everything in the bible is good, but Christianity evolved out of the dark ages, to an extent, and became largely separated from state. Whereas in many countries where Islam is dominant, state and religion are heavily interwoven.
Real followers of Islam align with many British values. It's the extremists & racists & bigots that are the problem.
Islam - properly understood - is totalising, denigrates the role of women and is opposed to freedom of expression and conscience.
A ‘religion’ that threatens & enforces threats to kill anybody who leaves it, is a cult. A ‘religion’ that does not care for 50% of its adherants where men have sexual paradise awash with virgins, but women are promised virtually nothing is a cult. A religion with multiple words for lying to non Muslims re the intentions of Muslims is a cult. European religious wars of 16th - 18th resulted in a kind of tolerance. Islam does not want tolerance, just dominance on pain of death
Anarchic practises, not compatible to western culture which is why they are slowly changing our way of life so that their views will trump ours.
It is time to legislate to clarify that Islam is a political movement and not a real religion. They want world domination - not holy enlightenment. It is an evil ideology that will smother us if we relax.
