Should social media be banned in the UK?

Voters here rejected a full UK ban on social media by 39 votes to 21, a 30-point margin that leaves no ambiguity about where the chamber landed, even as the question of under-16 restrictions remains live policy.

The sharpest fracture was generational, and it ran the opposite way to what the underlying under-16s policy debate might suggest. The one cohort that actually backed a ban was the youngest, 16-24s, at 67% yes on a small sample, while 55-64s voted almost unanimously against one, 9 of 10 saying no. The platform's most online generation was readier to entertain a ban than the one that grew up without smartphones.

Gender told a smaller but real story too: women split evenly, 7-7, while men rejected a ban by nearly two to one, 24-13. Combined with the age pattern, it suggests the vote wasn't a simple culture-war split between "protect the children" and "leave us alone" but something messier, closer to habitual users weighing their own relationship with the platforms against the harms debate that has driven policy in Westminster, Canberra and Ottawa alike.

A ban of this kind was always the maximalist option next to age-verification and content rules, and voters here treated it as such, decisively so.
