The UK monarchy continues as a constitutional institution with the King performing ceremonial and diplomatic duties while real political power rests with elected governments. Recent years have seen public discussion of its relevance, cost and role amid changing attitudes to inherited positions.
Abolition scraped home, 44 to 42, a two-point margin that makes this less a verdict than a coin-flip with a very slight lean towards the republic. On numbers this tight, no single bloc can claim to have swung it.
The generational pattern is the real story, and it runs against the assumption that youth means republicanism. The 16-24s were the most monarchist group in the chamber (1 yes of 5), while the 65+ voters were the most republican (7 of 11 yes), a reversal of the usual script on inherited institutions. The weight of the yes vote actually came from the middle, 25-34s splitting 16-13 in favour, the single largest bloc in the sample.
Gender told a milder version of the same story: women split 7-4 for abolition, men were essentially tied at 27-30. Neither gap is large enough to call decisive, but both point the same way, suggesting whatever appetite exists for scrapping the Crown is not concentrated where conventional wisdom expects it.
A monarchy debate settled, for now, by two votes and an age curve that runs backwards.
