Should Britain freeze diplomatic relations with countries which make claims on British territory?
Britain maintains sovereignty over 14 Overseas Territories including the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar and the British Antarctic Territory. Argentina has escalated its claims on the Falklands in September 2026 with new laws imposing fines and prison terms on oil firms operating there, alongside recent naval announcements. A 2025 treaty to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius has been paused amid US opposition, while other long-standing claims persist on Gibraltar and in Antarctica.

Diplomacy stops wars, talking is much better than killing each other
We should make it clear to Argentina and others we will defend our territory and if attacked you are leaving your countries open to attack. In 82 Maggie should have bombed a couple o Argentinian cities to show we could hit them if we wanted
It is easy to vote yes for this but the potential fall out of breaking diplomatic ties for simple making a claim could be disastrous. This referendum only mentions claims, no action. Just words, no declaration of war. Under these circumstances diplomatic channels must be open.
Of course we should. Britain has been too reticent in standing up for itself. When countries like Argentina & Mauritius renege of previous agreements and threaten international court action we should be telling them that business as usual obviously cannot continue. This can include closing embassies and other issues such as cancelling aid (obviously), visa bans and banning direct flights etc. They should understand that we wont just sit passively while they attack us.
This makes sense but takes no account of the FCO which is a law unto itself. When the status of Hong Kong was being negotiated Sir Percy Craddock a UK diplomat essentially took the Chinese side. The FCO is always about ‘managing our decline’. Unlike a US citizen the FCO does little to help UK citizens in distress but threaten to cut their gilded lives & all hell breaks loose. If countries want to play hard ball then we should respond in kind. Weakness is not a good look.
In my first comment I pointed out that most of these claims are just symbolic lip service and aren’t any kind of meaningful threat. But let’s consider the hypothetical in which there is actually a prospect of the country in question taking action to try and press their claim. The most important function of diplomacy is to manage conflict, no sensible or reasonable country cuts off diplomatic ties due to risk of war - potential war makes diplomacy more important not less.
It would be a rather absurd policy that would cut off our nose to spite our face. Most of these claims are basically just symbolic and don’t mean anything. Milei is making these noises about the Falklands because a sizeable minority of voters expect it of him and will be very annoyed if he doesn’t - but he has no intention of trying to conquer the falklands, it’s just lip service because words are cheap. The same has been true of every Argentine leader for decades.
Don't freeze relation but refuse to discuss the matter. The answer is no. End of discussion.
We would have no diplomatic relations with anyone if we did that. Stop talking to Ireland ?
Pretty hard to find a diplomatic solution if you freeze relations.
