Should the UK approve routine nationwide aerial drone deliveries by 2027?
Amazon is trialling drone deliveries in Darlington after completing over 500 flights, seeking CAA approval to cover the whole town with packages under 5lb delivered in under two hours. The government has invested nearly £50 million in 2026 to support drone regulation, BVLOS operations and infrastructure for commercial uses including deliveries. Current rules require Specific Category authorisation for most drone deliveries with full nationwide routine use still years from approval.

I'm saying yes, even though I think there are many questions that need answering. It's more than possible most of the problems have been raised and dealt with by those proposing to do this. With all new ideas there will be many who find difficulties, it takes time to adjust, and we will. It's going to happen, there'll be problems, enjoy being alive now with all the progress.
I fear for our feathered friends.
Prefer to improve the capabilities of drones for national security, or better use for emergencies etc. not uber eats.
Should we head towards making them an option for emergency NHS and time sensitive deliveries? Yes. Should we make them routine by 2027? No. At that point I feel like we are doing over public safety, privacy, and local peace for the sake of tech gimmicks that turn neighbourhoods into a drone flight path.
As far as I am aware the minimal restrictions currently exist for drones from group A1 under 250g. 5lb falling from 50-100 m could make much serious damage. Additional autonomous (AI-piloted) drones can be prone for system error (for all of them at once) and as always with AI matter of the responsibility may be open. Warning messages on all AI chats are there for a reason.

Drones flown by hobbyists cant do this today on safety grounds. The idea of wannabe tech-bros flying thousands of the cheapest autonomous drones they can source over towns is a recipe for a lot of injuries and fires. Maybe a mid-air collision or two if we're unlucky. Just remember how well letting them dump scooters everywhere went.
