Should half of government ministers be women?

A clear defeat: 16 of 21 voters said no to mandating a 50:50 gender split in government, a 52-point margin that leaves little ambiguity about how this chamber views Burnham's would-be pledge. Every age group with a meaningful sample — 16-24s, 25-34s, 35-44s, 55-64s — came in at 25% yes or below, suggesting this wasn't generational squeamishness but something closer to consensus scepticism about formal quotas.

The split worth dwelling on is gender. Men voted no by 9 to 2, an 18% yes share, while women were tied 3-3, exactly 50%. That's a textbook representation-politics divide: those the policy is designed to benefit are far more open to it than those who are not, even if neither group actually delivered it a majority.

It echoes the recurring tension in Labour's internal debates over gender quotas, going back to all-women shortlists in the 1990s: the argument that fair outcomes sometimes require unfair-looking rules runs up against a broader public instinct, on this evidence, that ministerial jobs should follow merit rather than mathematics.

For a Women's PLP hoping to bounce Burnham into a manifesto commitment, the chamber's verdict is a reminder that "50:50" plays very differently depending on who's holding the tally.
