Does the UK government give too much priority to minority groups at the expense of the majority?

UK public bodies must follow the Public Sector Equality Duty in the Equality Act 2010. It requires them to have due regard to eliminating discrimination, advancing equality of opportunity and fostering good relations between people who share protected characteristics and those who do not. The protected characteristics include age, disability, race, religion, sex and sexual orientation, so the law covers groups that include majorities, such as women and older people, as well as minorities. Government equality policy is scrutinised by the Women and Equalities Committee and the Equality and Human Rights Commission, but the law sets no fixed share of spending for any group.

Public bodies have become overly preoccupied with identity frameworks instead of focusing on their core duty of serving the public. The public sector should be run as a meritocracy, not a burocratic mess of unnecessary layers of red tape and box ticking nonsense as it currently is.

Absolutely. The Government has forgotten about the people who they should be supporting, to the point that we should be trying to force them out for not looking after British people.

The Media really has done some of you dirty on so many of society's problems, but especially on this. A real shame. ⭐️ If you build ramps instead of stairs, MOST PEOPLE will benefit. Edited

Two tier England. As the police work on guidelines that tell officers to treat some groups with care there is no equality throw a plastic bottle immediately arrested , rape a dying woman and we must understand the background. In employment stretching for diverse targets means the best candidate may not be appointed. Protected characteristics mean the opposite of equality - a catch 22.

The key point of the act is that it is for all citizens.

The Equalities Act 2010 is a pernicious piece of legislation. It mandates behaviour by the Public Sector which is highly discriminatory. Action of course becomes all consuming & totally skews the State’s response to perceived ‘inequality’. All viewed through the perverted lens of oppression. This Act must be repealed there is sufficient legislation to tackle real discrimination not contrived & activist led nonsense.

Our politics is being poisoned by the far right's scapegoating of minorities and grievance manufacturing. Equalities legislation has been broadly beneficial in righting historic discrimination and contemporary inequities. There is an important political job to convince people that you don't govern the country by blaming other people and kicking those less fortunate than yourselves.

Yes. Public bodies have misunderstood the PSED. The PSED allows positive discrimination in favour of a protected characteristic, but that can never justify negative discrimination against any of the other eight. So you can be transtastic, but not to the point where it interferes with my protected belief that sex is real and it matters.

Yes. We should have equality before the law, no special privileges of any kind for minority groups

Yes, I would argue the government sometimes prioritises minority groups too much instead of focusing on issues affecting the majority. things like the cost of living, NHS waiting lists and housing affect millions of people, yet people feel their concerns are overlooked Equality should mean treating everyone fairly, not giving certain groups more priority while others struggle with the same problems.
