Should a party leader change when the party is the incumbent party trigger a general election?
Keir Starmer resigned as Prime Minister and Labour leader in July 2026. Andy Burnham has been selected as the new Labour leader and is set to become Prime Minister without an immediate general election, as the party retains its parliamentary majority from the 2024 vote. UK constitutional convention allows a new party leader to take office if they command the confidence of the House of Commons, though this has sparked debate about democratic legitimacy given voters backed the prior manifesto and leader.

In a General Election a party is elected, faced by the leader. Realistically you're voting for the parties agenda, not the leaders. Therefore no real need to force a General Election if PM leaves\dies\becomes incapacitated
I don't see how this is even a question. I didn't vote for Burnham, so why should he automatically be PM? Laughably absurd. More of the same after Starmer's cataclysmic failure.
If a party is elected with a leader, then that leader becomes PM. If the leader changes then a GE should be had to allow for mandate change.
