Should Britain adopt Swiss‑style direct democracy with citizen‑initiated referendums?

The UK has no system of citizen-initiated referendums: Parliament decides when to hold referendums through specific legislation, as with the 2016 Brexit vote, and retains sovereignty over all laws. Switzerland uses direct democracy routinely, with citizens able to launch popular initiatives needing 100,000 signatures in 18 months or optional referendums on new laws with 50,000 signatures in 100 days, resulting in multiple national votes each year. A current UK parliamentary petition calling for a similar citizens’ referendum system on legislation has gathered few signatures as of late 2026.

Didnt they try this in California? Where people voted for constant tax reductions and also billions in new funding for several major projects and in turn wrecked state finances. I don't think it would play out much different here. The reason it works is Switzerland is it has 26 autonomous cantons, and the 7 member cross party government... Any vote needs majority of the 26 cantons and a total national majority to pass, meaning any polarising propositions generally fail anyway

Direct democracy is the only real democracy, or simpler is democracy. All other, representative or parliamentary etc. are only excuses to keep the power of decisions from silly, uneducated peasants.

Providing it can be delivered in a fair and cost effective way, It’s a measure to reduce current levels of disengagement in politics as well as ensure increased accountability in key decisions
