Should ID cards with fingerprints be introduced to improve suspect identification and border security?
The UK does not have compulsory national identity cards. Past Labour governments proposed them post-9/11 for security and identity verification but the scheme was scrapped in 2010 over cost, privacy, and liberty concerns. Biometric data like fingerprints is already collected from criminal suspects, visa applicants, and passport holders. Recent discussions link ID cards to tackling illegal immigration, grooming gang inquiries, and two-tier policing claims, but no major party currently proposes mandatory fingerprint ID cards for all citizens.

It’s a slope, for sure. On one hand, it moves us closer to a formalised police state, but if measures prove effective then that would be a gain. I could easily see this being applied to social media though, which is also a contentious topic
