Should the UK suspend its asylum system for up to five years?
The UK asylum system is currently open: anyone in the UK can claim asylum, and claims are assessed under the Refugee Convention and human rights law. Home Office figures show claims fell 21% to about 86,000 in the year to June 2026, and the initial-decision backlog fell to 32,400. On 12 October 2026 Reform UK pledged to suspend the system for up to five years, void about 90,000 pending claims and quit the ECHR, with Ukrainians exempt. The plan is a party proposal that would need legislation. The government has instead introduced 30-month refugee status reviews.

Yet more ridiculous bullshit from the neonazis
How will that help those seeking asylum? Bad idea and very selfish.
Not just asylum, but everything but skilled jobs as a whole. A country our size should be no where near as populated as it is
Honestly, this seems the best compromise. One that suits both those who wish to welcome the "huddled masses" and those concerned about the economy and demographics. Breathing space.
Freezing the system for five years won't stop a single dinghy crossing the Channel. All it does is leave tens of thousands of people stuck in legal limbo with zero paperwork, meaning we can't even deport the ones who shouldn't be here.... It needs reforming, yes. But we can't just bury our head in the sand when things get a bit difficult.
Yes, system doesn't work properly. We need new laws reflecting 21 century and new staff following a new laws.
Asylum should not be considered for able-bodied adult males. It should be for the most vulnerable only (such as vulnerable women and young children). It should also only cover the individual, not their family members
Make it ten and you're on.
