Is it too late to reindustrialise the UK?

Yes 34%No 66%58 votes cast

UK manufacturing output remains below pre-2008 levels, with the sector accounting for around 9% of GDP amid global supply chain shifts and net zero targets. Government industrial strategy includes investment in clean tech, semiconductors and defence manufacturing to reverse long-term deindustrialisation trends. Energy costs, skills shortages and planning rules continue to shape whether new factories and supply chains can be established competitively.

The verdict was emphatic rather than marginal: 38 of the 58 who voted said the moment for reindustrialisation has passed, against 20 who still see a path back, a 32-point gap that leaves little room for ambiguity about the mood in the chamber.

The generational pattern is the most telling feature of the vote. The youngest cohort, 16-24, split closest to even (3 of 7 yes), and the small band of over-65s tilted yes too, but the middle of the working-age population was where pessimism hardened - 35-44s backed "no" by 8 to 2, the most one-sided reading of any age group with a meaningful sample. It suggests those who have spent their careers watching Britain's manufacturing base shrink are the least persuaded that clean tech, semiconductors or defence spending can reverse it, while the youngest voters, with less lived memory of deindustrialisation, are marginally more open to the idea.

Gender added little friction to this story - men (37% yes) and women (31% yes) landed within six points of each other, both clearly on the "no" side. That convergence points to something structural rather than tribal: this reads less like a culture-war question and more like a hard-nosed economic judgement, the same instinct that fuels scepticism about industrial strategy delivering where energy costs, skills gaps and planning rules have defeated previous attempts.

If there is a kicker here, it is that the only age group to lean firmly optimistic was the one furthest from the shop floor and the one closest to retirement - not exactly the coalition industrial strategists would hope to build a revival on.
