Should the UK build hybrid warships instead of new destroyers?

Yes 50%No 50%30 votes cast

The Ministry of Defence plans to scrap a new destroyer programme and build at least six hybrid vessels equipped for drone operations. The outgoing Prime Minister has committed to publishing the defence investment plan before the July Nato summit. The Treasury has not committed extra funding to close capability gaps.

A perfect 15-15 split is a rare thing on refnation, and this defence question produced exactly that — no side could claim even a single-vote mandate for scrapping the destroyer programme in favour of six hybrid, drone-ready vessels. Given the Treasury's silence on extra funding, a tied chamber looks like an honest reflection of a genuinely unresolved trade-off between capability and cost.

The more revealing story sits in the age breakdown. Voters aged 25-34, the largest cohort here at 14, voted decisively against the hybrid pivot (5 yes, 9 no, 36% yes), suggesting real unease among younger adults about trading proven destroyer firepower for a more experimental, drone-centric fleet. Compare that to the 35-44 bracket, who backed the switch by two to one, and the 16-24s, who leaned no despite their small numbers — there's no clean generational story, more a dip in enthusiasm concentrated in the millennial cohort.

Gender told a quieter version of the same tale: men split exactly down the middle (10-10), while the seven women who voted leaned narrowly against hybrid ships (43% yes). Neither gap is dramatic, but both point the same way — resistance to the idea clusters wherever there's the largest sample, while smaller, older groups (55-64, 65+) tilted or split evenly, hardly the ringing endorsement the MoD's modernisers might have hoped for.

In a debate that echoes the Royal Navy's perennial tension between mass and technology, the vote itself became a small proof of the argument's unresolved state — Britain-on-the-platform simply could not decide whether the future of naval power looks more like a drone carrier or a destroyer.
