The result reads narrow — 27 to 24, a six-point margin that puts Yes over the line but leaves no room to call it a mandate. On a question this technical, that closeness is itself the story: voters here are not settled on how Britain should wire up its own decarbonisation.

The real fracture sits between the sexes, not the ages. Men voted Yes 19 to 8 (70%), women voted No 11 to 5 (31% Yes) — a near-mirror-image split that did more to decide this vote than any generational divide. Age, by contrast, barely moved the needle: every bracket from 25 to 64 sat close to an even split, drifting from the low-to-mid fifties down to a bare 50-50 among 55-64s, with only the small clutch of over-65s leaning more clearly No.

That gender gulf echoes a familiar pattern in energy politics, where infrastructure-heavy, systems-level fixes — grid reform, storage, transmission — tend to poll better with men than the household-facing costs-and-bills framing that often resonates more with women. It suggests this vote was less about whether Britain has an electricity gap than about whose language should be used to close it.

A whole-systems approach won the vote; it did not win the room.
