Should the UK still have such emphasis on the transatlantic relationship considering the USA's instability?

Yes 54%No 46%65 votes cast

The transatlantic relationship remains central to UK foreign policy through NATO membership, intelligence sharing via Five Eyes, and trade links that account for significant portions of UK exports. The United States continues to serve as the UK's largest single trading partner outside the EU. Recent years have seen policy divergences on issues including tariffs, defence spending commitments, and approaches to global security challenges.

By a slim 54-46, the chamber said Britain leans too hard on the US alliance given America's volatility — a win, but the kind built on a handful of votes rather than a mandate. Six points separated yes from no in raw numbers; this was a division, not a rout.

The sharpest fault line was generational, and it did not run the way instinct might suggest. The 55-64 bracket voted 8 to 2 for yes, the most sceptical of the transatlantic bond of any group with a meaningful sample, while the youngest cohort, 16-24, broke the other way, 5 of 8 against — the group that has grown up entirely inside the post-2016, post-Trump order proving the most reluctant to talk of loosening it. The middle-aged 45-54 and 35-44 bands sat closer to the national split, tilting mildly towards yes.

Gender told a smaller but consistent story: men backed yes 54-46, women opposed it 43-57, a gap that echoes a familiar pattern on this platform where security and alliance questions tend to divide along gender lines as much as ideological ones. Given NATO, Five Eyes and trade with the US all rest on the same institutional scaffolding, the result reads less as a rejection of the alliance than as a generational shrug at its permanence.

The over-65s, the generation that remembers the Cold War logic behind the alliance most directly, were among the most divided of all — proof that nostalgia for the special relationship is not what it once was.
