Would Ed Miliband make a good chancellor under Andy Burnham?

Voters here rejected the idea of Ed Miliband as chancellor in an Andy Burnham government comfortably, 49 to 24, a margin of 34 points that puts this well beyond statistical noise for a 73-vote sample. It reads as a rebuff not just of Miliband personally but of the whole speculative premise of a Burnham-led Labour future built around a net-zero-focused Treasury.

The generational pattern is the more striking feature. The youngest cohort, 16-24, backed Miliband 5 to 3, and the 25-34s split dead even at 10-10 — but from 35 onwards the verdict hardens sharply into No, bottoming out at just 10% support among 45-54s. It is the closest thing to a clean age cliff this platform produces: enthusiasm for the Brown-era Miliband, and the green-investment brief he now represents, fades fast once you clear 35.

The gender gulf is just as pronounced and cuts against the age story in an interesting way. Women voters, though a much smaller group, backed the idea 8 to 3 (73% yes), while men rejected it by almost three to one (27% yes, 36 of 49). That combination — a small but decisive female Yes bloc against a large male No bloc — echoes patterns seen elsewhere on this platform when personnel questions touch technocratic, policy-wonk figures rather than tribal leadership contests.

Miliband remains, on this evidence, a figure Britain-on-the-platform respects more in theory than wants in office again.
