Should the Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, resign over handing an award to Muslim cleric who praised Bin Laden?
Sarah Mullally, the Archbishop of Canterbury, presented the Hubert Walter Award for Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation to Pakistani cleric Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi at Lambeth Palace on 11 September 2026, the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Ashrafi heads the Pakistan Ulema Council, which in 2007 awarded Osama bin Laden the title Saifullah (Sword of God) for fighting against the Russians, Americans and British. Following public backlash after the 2007 comments surfaced, Lambeth Palace withdrew the award on 17 September 2026, citing the newly highlighted remarks.

Thoughtless insult to grieving families. Forgiveness is not hers to offer.
Doing this on the 25th anniversary is disgusting. Giving awards from the Archbishop of Canterbury to Muslims is just taking the pi$$. They just don't seem to care anymore whether we think they are betraying this country.
She does not represent the Christian faith and this is the final straw.
No. If the award was withdrawn already - that will suffice. We don't deep dive that far into someone's past e.g. to hire them...so a mistake was made. Let it pass, we are mature enough to give the proverbial side-eye before actually throwing stones! Sometimes shaming works better than anything else.
I mean come on, giving this award in the anniversary of 9/11. It couldn't be any worse. Gotta go.
