Should the UK overhaul its energy system to change how families are charged for gas and electricity?

Andy Burnham, the former Greater Manchester Mayor, is reportedly considering major changes to the UK's energy system and how families pay for gas and electricity to bring bills down.

The verdict landed with unusual force for a subject as dry as tariff design: nearly three in four voters backed an overhaul of how gas and electricity bills are charged, a scale of agreement that referendums on this platform rarely produce. Cost-of-living grievances, it seems, cut through generational lines that usually define these votes.

The one fracture worth dwelling on is gender, not age. Men backed reform by roughly three to one, while women were essentially evenly divided leaning slightly against it — suggesting the "overhaul the system" framing appealed more to those drawn to structural, technocratic fixes than to those wary of disruption to a system, however flawed, that at least behaves predictably.

That divide echoes a familiar pattern in energy politics, where bold restructuring proposals — standing charges, regional pricing, social tariffs — tend to poll well in the abstract but meet more caution once the practical trade-offs of "who pays what" become concrete. Burnham's team will read the topline as a mandate; the smaller print suggests persuading women voters of the detail is where any such plan would actually be won or lost.

A green light with real momentum, but one built on a coalition that isn't yet evenly balanced.
